What to expect

How product manager interviews work

Product manager interviews test how you decide what to build and why. Interviewers want to hear your reasoning out loud: how you understand users, prioritize, use data and work with engineering and design.

Expect questions about a product you shipped, a feature you decided not to build, how you prioritize, a disagreement with an engineer, and a metric you would track. Product sense questions such as "How would you improve this product?" are common.

Common questions

Product manager interview questions

  1. 1. Tell me about a product or feature you launched.

What they listen for: The user problem, how you decided, your role with the team, and the measured result.

  2. 2. How do you decide what to build next?

What they listen for: A clear way to prioritize, such as user impact against effort, backed by evidence, and saying no to good ideas.

  3. 3. How would you improve a product you use every day?

What they listen for: Who the users are, a specific problem, a few options, and how you would measure success.

  4. 4. Tell me about a disagreement with an engineer or designer.

What they listen for: Understanding their view, using data or users to decide, and keeping the relationship strong.

  5. 5. A key metric dropped 10% last week. What do you do?

What they listen for: Checking the data first, breaking it down by segment and recent changes, then forming hypotheses.

  6. 6. Tell me about a feature you decided not to build.

What they listen for: The reasoning, the trade-off and how you explained the decision.

What a strong answer has

  • State the user and the problem first.
  • Explain your reasoning and the options you considered.
  • Give the decision and the result, with a metric.
  • Show what you learned.

Tips

  • Practice thinking out loud. Interviewers score the reasoning, not only the answer.
  • Have two product stories ready: a success and something that did not work.
  • Ask clarifying questions before answering open-ended product questions.

FAQ

Questions

What questions are asked in a product manager interview?

Products you launched, how you prioritize, improving an existing product, metrics, a drop in a metric, disagreements with engineering or design, and features you chose not to build.

How should I answer product sense questions?

Clarify the goal, choose a user group, name their problems, suggest a few solutions, pick one and explain how you would measure it.

How does the practice interview work?

Paste the job posting, or enter the role and employer. By default the AI interviewer speaks and you answer by voice, but you can switch to text. It asks questions for that job and follows up on your answers. Afterwards you get a scored review: an overall score, a score for each skill, a summary and coaching notes. It runs in your browser.

Is it free?

Your first practice interview is free, with its full scored review, and you don't need a card to sign up. After that, each interview is a one-off $5, or unlimited on the Individual plan.
