What to expect
How data analyst interviews work
Data analyst interviews usually include a technical check, such as SQL, Excel or a take-home task, plus conversation rounds where you explain your work. The second part is where many candidates struggle: describing an analysis clearly to someone who wasn't there.
Interviewers listen for how you frame a business question, how you handle messy data, and whether you can explain a result to someone without a technical background.
Common questions
Data analyst interview questions
1. Walk me through an analysis you did from start to finish.
What they listen for: The business question, the data, how you cleaned and analyzed it, what you found, and what changed because of it.
2. How do you handle missing or messy data?
What they listen for: That you investigate why it is missing, choose a reasonable approach, and say clearly what that does to the results.
3. Tell me about a time you explained a finding to someone non-technical.
What they listen for: Plain language, focus on the decision it supports, and a simple chart or comparison rather than method details.
4. Tell me about a time your analysis was wrong or questioned.
What they listen for: How you checked it, owned the mistake or defended the result with evidence, and what you do now to catch errors.
5. How do you decide which metric to use?
What they listen for: Linking the metric to the goal, watching for metrics that can be gamed, and checking with stakeholders.
6. Which tools do you use, and how do you choose between them?
What they listen for: Honest proficiency in SQL, spreadsheets, BI tools or Python and R, and choosing based on the task, not habit.
What a strong answer has
- Start with the business question, not the tools.
- One real analysis, with the data, method and caveats explained simply.
- The result in numbers, and the decision it led to.
- A clear structure. The way you explain is a sample of how you would present at work.
Tips
- Practice explaining one project in two minutes to someone who doesn't know the data.
- Prepare a story about data quality. Every analyst has one, and interviewers ask.
- Career changers: analysis from a previous job, a course or a public dataset counts if you can explain the question and the result.

FAQ
Questions
What questions are asked in a data analyst interview?
Questions about an analysis you did end to end, messy data, explaining results to non-technical people, mistakes, choosing metrics and the tools you use, alongside SQL or Excel tests.
Does this practice SQL questions?
No. It covers behavioral questions and explaining your analytical work, by voice or text. It doesn't include a SQL editor.
How does the practice interview work?
Paste the job posting, or enter the role and employer. By default the AI interviewer speaks and you answer by voice, but you can switch to text. It asks questions for that job and follows up on your answers. Afterwards you get a scored review: an overall score, a score for each skill, a summary and coaching notes. It runs in your browser.
Is it free?
Your first practice interview is free, with its full scored review, and you don't need a card to sign up. After that, each interview is a one-off $5, or unlimited on the Individual plan.
