What to expect

How nursing assistant (cna) interviews work

Nursing assistant interviews focus on patient care, patience and reliability. Hiring managers in nursing homes, hospitals and home care want to know you treat residents with dignity, follow care plans and show up for every shift.

Expect questions about a difficult or confused patient, privacy, safety such as preventing falls, working with nurses, and the physical, repetitive parts of the job.

Common questions

Nursing assistant (CNA) interview questions

  1. 1. Why do you want to be a CNA?

What they listen for: A real reason connected to caring for people, and an honest understanding of the daily work.

  2. 2. How would you care for a resident who refuses a bath?

What they listen for: Respecting their choice, trying again calmly or at another time, and reporting it to the nurse.

  3. 3. What would you do if you noticed a change in a patient's condition?

What they listen for: Reporting it to the nurse right away and documenting it as your training and facility policy require, without trying to diagnose.

  5. 5. Tell me about a time you dealt with a difficult family member.

What they listen for: Listening, staying calm and kind, and involving the nurse for anything about the care plan.

  6. 6. How do you prevent falls?

What they listen for: Following the care plan and facility policy, with practical steps such as call lights within reach, non-slip footwear and safe transfers, and asking the nurse when unsure.

What a strong answer has

  • Start with what you would do for the patient's safety and dignity.
  • Mention reporting to the nurse where it applies.
  • Use a real example from clinicals or past jobs if you have one.
  • Keep it short and warm; interviewers listen for how you speak about patients.

Tips

  • Have a story about a patient you helped, and one about a hard shift.
  • Know your certification status and any state registry details.
  • Be honest about which shifts you can work. Reliability matters a lot here.
