What to expect

How sales representative interviews work

Sales interviews test whether you can do the job in the room. The hiring manager listens to how you talk about numbers, how you handle pushback, and whether you ask good questions, because that is what you would be doing with customers.

Some sales interviews include a role-play, such as "sell me this pen", a pitch or a mock discovery call. Expect questions about quotas, a deal you lost, and how you build a pipeline. Vague answers without numbers stand out for the wrong reasons.

Common questions

Sales representative interview questions

  1. 1. Walk me through your sales numbers. Did you hit quota?

What they listen for: Specific figures: quota, attainment, deal size and ranking on the team. Be honest about a missed quarter and what you did about it.

  2. 2. Tell me about a deal you lost. What happened?

What they listen for: Ownership of what you could have done differently, not blaming price or the product, and what you changed afterwards.

  3. 3. How do you handle the objection "it's too expensive"?

What they listen for: That you find out what is behind it, tie the price to value the customer cares about, and don't jump straight to a discount.

  4. 4. How do you build your pipeline?

What they listen for: A repeatable routine: prospecting sources, daily activity, follow-up, and how you decide which leads to spend time on.

  5. 5. Sell me something.

What they listen for: That you ask questions about their needs before pitching, connect features to those needs, and ask for the close.

  6. 6. Why sales, and why this company?

What they listen for: Real interest in what they sell and who buys it, not only the commission. Show you have looked at their product and customers.

What a strong answer has

  • Numbers: quota, attainment, deal size, cycle length, ranking.
  • A specific deal or customer, told as a short story with a result.
  • Your own actions, including the questions you asked the customer.
  • Energy and confidence without overselling yourself.

Tips

  • Practice the role-play out loud. Ask discovery questions first; most candidates pitch too early.
  • Bring your numbers in a form you can say quickly, for example "112% of quota over four quarters".
  • Close the interview: ask what concerns they have about you, then answer them.

FAQ

Questions

What questions are asked in a sales interview?

Questions about your numbers and quota, a lost deal, handling objections, building a pipeline, and why you want to sell their product. Some also include a role-play, such as "sell me this pen" or a mock call.

How do I answer "sell me this pen"?

Don't start by describing the pen. Ask the interviewer how they use pens and what they need, then connect the pen to that, and finish by asking for the sale.

How does the practice interview work?

Paste the job posting, or enter the role and employer. By default the AI interviewer speaks and you answer by voice, but you can switch to text. It asks questions for that job and follows up on your answers. Afterwards you get a scored review: an overall score, a score for each skill, a summary and coaching notes. It runs in your browser.

Is it free?

Your first practice interview is free, with its full scored review, and you don't need a card to sign up. After that, each interview is a one-off $5, or unlimited on the Individual plan.
