What to expect
How administrative assistant interviews work
Administrative assistant interviews focus on organization, judgment and discretion. The manager you would support wants to know you can juggle calendars, requests and deadlines without dropping anything, and represent them well on the phone and by email.
Expect questions about prioritizing, handling confidential information, the software you know, and a time something went wrong. Some employers add a short skills test, such as typing, Excel or a writing sample.

What they listen for: Discretion: what you kept private, how you stored or shared it, and that you didn't gossip about it.
3. Which software and tools do you use every day?
What they listen for: Specifics: Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, calendars, spreadsheets, any scheduling or CRM tools, and how comfortable you are with each.

What they listen for: Calm, polite and firm, getting the information needed, and knowing when to pass it on.
6. How do you keep track of deadlines and follow-ups?
What they listen for: A real system, such as a task list, calendar reminders or a tracker, and an example of it working.
What a strong answer has
- A specific situation from a past role, school or volunteering.
- The steps you took, showing how you organized it.
- The outcome for the person or team you supported.
- Clear, concise delivery. How you communicate is part of what they are hiring.
Tips
- Prepare an example of managing competing priorities. It is one of the most common admin interview topics.
- Be honest about software skill levels, and mention anything you learned quickly on the job.
- Ask who you would support and what a typical day looks like. It shows you are thinking about the job, not just the offer.
